How do you change an axis of a variable font with multiple styles?

I have a font with two axes, weight and width. I have text with multiple weights. How can I change the width without changing the weight? When a variable font has multiple styles, the variable options button is greyed out. Is there a way to keep it open? If not, is there some third-party extension for working with variable fonts?
