How do you create a cut layer in Illustrator?

I have a file with vector art and is colored in a gradient.  They are letters that will be printed on a wide format printer and then contoured cut on a plotter.

You will need to ask the service bureau about the exact specifications needed for this. They vary from service to service deending on their workflows and the hardware in use.

You need an hollow punch. Put on a new layer the outline of your text in black color. The printer will use the hollow punch for cutting.

However you can create a separate document for the hollow punch.
