How to add detail to hair

Hi, is there a way I can add detail to hair by making a scatter brush or is it better to individually draw the lines in the hair. I sent an example and I have circled what I'm  talking about. The first photo isn't my work. The second is my work and you see how plain the hair looks.

Surely it's a job for Scatter Brush.

I have to agree with John.  The Scatter brush is where it's at
