I can't expand a gradient

I'm trying to expand a gradient in Adobe Illustrator to convert it into blocks of color in specific steps, but the software won't allow me to do it. I've followed all the instructions to the letter and I'm sure I'm not making any mistakes. I'm using Adobe Illustrator 2025. Has anyone else experienced the same issue?

Is it a traditional gradient or the newer Free Form Gradient?
