I don't know where to start!

I've had Creative Cloud for many years, and I've managed to muddle through the rare occasions I've had to use it with a LOT of frustration and at one point paying someone to do something for me - which I simply cannot afford to do.

I scanned a line drawing from an old public-domain book cover and eventually was able to make it black on a transparent background. I tried various apps - Firefly, Adobe Express, Photoshop, and Illustrator to try to get to the point where I am now.

I wanted to add some color to the drawing and hoped AI would do that - Firefly kept adding to it and ignoring my instructions not to add new elements to the drawing - and the colors were terrible.

I'm in Illustrator now, and tried to follow another discussion where someone had described a similar problem. But nothing described even seems to exist - I cannot get to a Smart Paint Bucket, and I can't select a color from a pallet and try to color in a part of the drawing.

I used to use Fireworks for things - it was so much more straightforward - and over the years I've tried to use Photoshop or Illustrator to get my routine work done (which is not much and not often).

I'm apparently not in the right "mode" in illustrator. The image was saved as a PNG in Firefly, opened and saved as a .ai in Illustrator, but I can't tell if the background transparenty is still there or not, and I cannot seem to get the image into a mode that will allow me to color in the elements. I've attache a low-resolution png so you can see what I"m working with.

I don't do this kind of work all the time.

Thank you,
Ernie
