I am getting an unexpected error dialog when I try to save a file in Illustrator 2017. It seems to happen after I add a few layers and use the pen tool. I had to roll back to the previous version and that works fine. Wondering if anybody else has had the same challenge. On a win 10 surface.

Confirmed: All layers unlocked and visible.

Hi Torgeir,
Were you saving the file locally in the machine? Please share the screenshot of the error.

I'm having the same problem, right after I upgraded to 2017 version. This must be a bug imo.
It happens to some of my files. Strangely when the files have locked layers, the files won't save. But when I unlock all of the layers, the files can be saved successfully.

It happens to me while my files are in RGB mode, change to CMYK then files could be saved even with locked layer/sublayer.

What a waste of time! Who will pay me when I cannot use Adobe Illustrator? I just cannot work. It does not save files after update. FIX ASAP.

I'm having a similar issue. I'll be working on an illustration, and Illustrator quits suddenly. The recovered file comes up when I restart it, but I can't save over the old file, nor rename it as a new file. Keeps giving me the "unexpected error" notification.

Just found out, it will save, but ONLY if ALL my layers are UNlocked.
This is just silly.

i found the same workaround : all layers must be displayed and unlocked to be able to save the file....

That's the same behavior I saw. I would unlock all my layers and the file would save fine (I was in RGB mode and didn't need to change modes). 😕

I'm having the same issue, though not with every file, and I can't figure out the common denominator of the files it happens with. The only way to get the file to save once I get the "Unexpected Error" message is to show all layers as well. I hope this is fixed soon.

Hi all,
Sorry for the inconvenience caused. We are able to reproduce the same at our end. At the moment the workaround is to save the file with the layers unlocked. The bug is already reported to the Engineering Team and we are working on it.

Is this going to be fixed soon? I'm having the same problem and it's now November 22. This is a huge pain.

Hallo Adobe?! Is there still no solution for this problem? I mean this is not freeware. I pay for it every month, and saving a file is not something really special… should be working, I think… So would you please try and fix this issue or at least tell us why you don't?

Having the same issue. Like majority once all layers are unlocked and in my case I even have to put all layers visible it will then save.
I am working off a server and it's disrupting my workflow so a quick fix ASAP would be great!

I had this issue and fixed it myself before finding this forum thread. In my case, none of my layers are locked (or have been) and I have to turn on all the layers in order to save...this is the only file in my considerable library of files that requires this.
The reason I'm posting is that the original message was referring to Illustrator on Windows and I didn't see a mention of anyone on Mac OS...just wanted you to know...it's on the Mac platform as well...
Come on, Adobe....your sloppiness with software that governs our careers is embarrassing...don't get me started on After Effects....

Hi @sparkyrose
I'm on a Mac, and I have the same issue. Downloading the update now, which I hope will fix this problem, or I will be missing my deadline.

As I understand, they rolled out the update and went on holiday vocation. You see, these are just a small glitches - You just can't normally save or export! Two little bugs, which is none of the importance. Save crashes every time, there's a hidden or locked layer, and "export artboards to .jpg" just exports to CMYK. Thank god, no one works more or in a rush before Christmas, cause all the Christmas cards and other stuff is already produced in November!
Have a nice holidays, folks.

This is absurd. The issue is over a month old and still no resolution. Can you refund the subscription fee for the time it has not worked?

You will need to join the pre-release group. Find instructions at the top of the Overview page.

Sorry, but I pay for a software every month! I will not spent my time joining some pre-release group to install any pre-release maybe working software and test it. Adobe knows, there is a mistake in the software and I think it's up to Adobe to fix it, test it and bring a new proper version to their clients as soon as possible…
