Illustrator creating multiple .tmp & .bak files while working and saving a file on Windows machine

Possibly with the last update or possibly I changed something in the preferences, but now Illustrator is creating multiple tmp files and bak files when I'm working and saving files.  In a recent project I was creating 200+ files and now I have over 800+ tmp and bak files.  I've read several forums to go into preferences and uncheck Automatically Save Recover Data..., but it's still creating all these tmp files.  I'm tired of deleteing 10-20 tmp files every day.  Any suggestions?

Hi there,

Sorry about the trouble. Could you please share a few more details like:

    • OS and the exact version of Illustrator
    • Please share a sample document with us. You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
    • Where are you saving the files (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System/ External HDD)?
    • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system?
    • Do you have an Antivirus installed on your system? If yes, try creating an exception for Illustrator and see if that helps to resolve.
    • Does resetting Illustrator Preferences (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html) help to resolve the issue?
Disclaimer: Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also take a backup of the folders in case you want to. Location is mentioned in the article.

Moreover, it can be possible .bak files in your system are associated or default open with Adobe apps, as the Illustrator Auto Recovery feature doesn't create .bak files.

We are here to help, just need more information.

Thanks & Regards,
Anshul Saini

Hi @Hastika,

Thanks for reaching out. This generally happens while working through the network drive/ server.

Would you mind unchecking the following setting in app preferences and see if that helps:

  • Uncheck "Save in Background"
  • Uncheck "Export in Background"
  • Uncheck "Optimize File Open & Save Time on Slow Networks"

Kindly update the discussion if you still need assistance with it. We'd be happy to help.

Thanks,
Anshul Saini

I'm experiencing the same issue since an update over a month ago. I've tried unchecking all these settings in the file handling prefs, but no luck. The files are saved in a OneDrive network folder. I'm running Illustrator 27.2 64 bit on Windows 10 Enterprise, Version 21H2, 16GB RAM. HP Elitebook. AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650U with Radeon Graphics 2.10 GHz

Hi @defaultf5ytl2d0ah2j,

Thank you for reaching out about the issue you're experiencing with Illustrator creating multiple .tmp and .bak files when saving files to a OneDrive network folder on your Windows 10 Enterprise machine.

This issue could be related to the OneDrive file synchronization system conflicting with Illustrator's file handling system. Some users have reported that disabling OneDrive file synchronization for the folder where the Illustrator files are saved can help resolve this issue.

Also, you may try saving the file to a local folder on your computer instead of the OneDrive network folder to see if the issue persists. This will help determine whether the problem is specific to the OneDrive folder or not.
If the issue still occurs when saving to a local folder, try disabling the Autosave feature in Illustrator. To do this, go to Edit > Preferences > File Handling & Clipboard, and uncheck the "Automatically Save Recovery Data Every" option.
If disabling Autosave doesn't help, try changing the Illustrator scratch disk location to a local folder on your computer. To do this, go to Edit > Preferences > Scratch Disks and select a local folder as the primary scratch disk.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Best,

Anshul Saini

hello,

I'm experiencing the same issue for quite sometime now. I've tried unchecking all these settings in the file handling prefs as you suggested, but no luck.

I'm facing this issue only on Illustrator when I'm working with picturs whether JPG or PNG. The moment I save the Illustrator file, a number of temp files get created in the same file location for each picture used ( for example if i used 5 pictuers i would be having 2temp files for each one and the more I use the more temp I get )

This started happening when i first started using Illustrator 2023 version, The windows version I'm using is Windows 11 and I save the files in System HDD, I've tried saving on the D drive and on Desktop but same issue.  I already tried resetting Illustrator Preferences but no luck either.

This is so furstrating to have to delete 100+ files each day so any suggestion that can help I'll be so gratful.

or if I can at least change the file location and redirect the temp files to be saved in the systym's original "temp file" located on the C drive,

best regards,

Jasmine

Hello @Jasmineo,

I am sorry to hear about your experience. Would you mind trying to run Illustrator after rebooting your computer in Safe Mode (Windows / macOS) and checking if it helps? Also, try running Illustrator under a different administrator account (Windows / macOS) and sharing your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Anubhav

Also seems to happen on Windows machine, where windows has issues when files are open in other software. The issue seems to be when using a linked .AI file in say Photoshop, while the PSD is open and you also have the AI file open in Illustrator. Its something hidous from Windows i guess. On OSX it doesnt matter if i change the name while its open. When you then save, OSX simple shows the save as dialog, where as Windows prevents you from doing anything
