Illustrator problem saving catalogue after editing, saves 1 page and loses catalogue (on server)

Hi, for many years i was using Adobe CS2 and now the 2024 cloud versions of the Adobe products.

Normaly I can open a pdf catalogue for editing, choosing the one page that needs editing. Than save it, and the whole document stays intact. 

 

Now when saving it saves only the page edited (document is 7422 KB / page  is 199 Kb) and the whole catalogue is gone. (3/4 days work). 

 

Spent allready several hours with the Adobe remote service but no solution. They suggested to save every single page and edit. Than reassemle to make a catalogue. This is not the way, and uneccesarily more work to get the job done.

 

Has anyone any idea how this is even possible? It all started after there was a problem with the fonts in the library. While scrolling the fonts Illustrator shutted down. Adobe resolved the problem by installing an older version of Illustrator. But a new problem arised. 

 

Hopefully someone can help here? Otherwise I wil have no use anymore for Adobe.

Your computer looks more than capable to run Illustrator smoothly.

I wanted to suggest to contact support, but after your answer about external drives/server, I hesitate to do that.

Support does not help with troubleshooting networks/servers.

The safest way is to save local and when finished, copy the file to the server.

So you create this catalogue in Illustrator? Then why do you need to edit a PDF?

Or if you create the catalogue in a different application, then why don't you edit the original file?

Hi Monika, this particular catalogue not. (normaly, if necessary illustrator is my choice of preference). 

In this specific case the catalogue is has been sent to us as a pdf. But as you probably know, Illustrator will give you many options not only to translate the document but also to modify the layout where necessary. I feel that I have more freedom in that. If you can provide a solution to the problem I am currently experiencing, I would be happy to hear it from you.

I can't see in which way Illustrator would be a good choice for creating or editing a catalogue. Of all things, a catalogue has the most features that Illustrator just can't do.

 

So what is it that you need to do that InDesign can't do better for a catalogue? Or if it is about prepress stuff: use PDF toolbox, or plain Acrobat or whatever other prepress tool there is.

That's the dialog showing when opening the pdf. In range I select the page that I'd like to edit, e.g. page 2-2. and I don't check the Import PDF pages as links.

Goedemorgen Tiziano, which version do you use, I am using the 28.5 Mac version and when I specify a page number in the Range section, it opens that page and after some edits, I just hit save and the page is saved into the PDF.

That is also what you expected.

Processor 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700F, 2100 MHz, 12 core('s), 20 logische processor(s)

Geïnstalleerd fysiek geheugen (RAM) 32,0 GB
Totaal fysiek geheugen 31,8 GB
Beschikbaar fysiek geheugen 23,2 GB
Totaal virtueel geheugen 65,8 GB
Beschikbaar virtueel geheugen 56,4 GB
Ruimte voor wisselbestand 34,0 GB

 

We purchased this computer  recently and specifically to use Adobe via the cloud. It should have sufficient capacity.

 

We are (our IT-specialist) is trying everything, e.g. shutting down Kaspersky Security, maybe some windows update is changed accesability. We are still in the dark. 

 

And yes, exactly as you explained is the way it should work.

Do you save the file to a server?

Does the same happen when you save it to the harddisk?

Is the option "Save in background" turned off in the preferences? If not, turn it off.

Illustrator has always has issues with servers. Unless you find the sweet spot with the server settings, you will not get it to work.

Perhaps unnecessary and also intended for the rest of the community who have provided me with advice, I would still like to add the following. I formatted documents page by page in Illustrator and later combined all the pages into a PDF to print a booklet. I experience the same problems with this original document as well.

If the files were combined in Acrobat, they lose their Illustrator editing capabilities.

Only files saved as PDF with the option "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" checked, can be safely opened and edited in Illustrator.

When combined in Acrobat, they will lose the Illustrator part of the file.

You need to select All not just the page you want to edit.

 

The best practice is to go back to the person sending you the PDF and ask them to send the file in the original format. You should then edit in that program. If it is not Illustrator, then opening the PDF in Illustrator to edit has even more problems than if the PDF was exported from Illustrator from layers getting combined, to paragraphs and words splitting it up. If they do not understand this is the way to work you should charge them extra as they really do not know what they are doing and deserve to be charged extra for the additional efforts needed to edit their submissions.

 

PDF is not meant for editing, it is meant to be used for a final format eg:  post to the web,  emailing, Anything besides for fields being filled out or comments added is not the correct way to work.
