Recently updated to Mac OS Catalina 10.15.1 and now when I try to open any of my existing Illustrator files I get this error message: "Could not read the file because the plug-in could not understand this file." Extremely frustrating as I frequently have to access older files for work. In a bit of a panic...Please advise.

Error message occurs in Illustrator only, not mac os x.  InDesign and Photoshop seem to be fine.  Really at my wits end...this issue is having a major impact on my work.

STILL waiting to be able to use Illustrator with Mac OS Catalina. Won’t open, just quits. ANY help would be wonderful. Apple says it is should be working and I was told by Adobe it was not ready yet. So what are we to do?

I have to use illustrator on an older mac (old version of Illustrator) just to keep things moving and it is complicating things. I really need illustration that I can use. InDesign is fine and so is Photoshop. So it has to be illustrator.  Torcher.

Hi AntCreations!

Thank you so much for posting Srishti's fix! I too upgraded to Catalina a few days ago and had some Ai files not open in Ai with the message "Could not read the file because an error has occurred.". Was a bit scary but after following this tip to enable full disk access all is back to normal. Thanks! (I also posted this comment on the original post)
