Is there a way to adjust the opacity without making it look like it's transparent?

 

for example 

instead of looking like this

Create  a Global Color Swatch and use percentages of it in the Color panel.

Ton is correct. You want to create tints of a color which you do using the Tint (T) slider in the Color panel. Only swatches marked as Global can be used to create tints.
