Issue with creating pattern swatches

Hi all

For my school project we're meant to be creating a pattern swatch to incorporate in to a packaging design. I've created my pattern with the help of a tutorial, making sure the pattern overlaps one another correctly and am quite happy with how it is meant to look, but when I transfer this pattern in to a swatch it's completely messed up and does not repeat correctly. I've attached a picture with how it should roughly look, then how the swatch looks applied to a circle. This is really confusing and I was wondering if it's me who's made a mistake or if the program is bugged out.

How did you actually define the Pattern?
