I would like to be able to join the absolute outside edge of two arcs accurately. I get half way there using tangents from a point script but I still have to eyeball the first point. I have tried metaball script too but it doesn't really like arcs. Any help would be appreciated.

There are some plugins that can assist you. Some of them may be free.
Do a Google search for "line tangent to two paths illustrator plugin".

Best one is free Astute Graphics plug in called Subscribe
It's free and safe , but you have send a email for a key.
Then download their downloader, run it with Subscribe ticked - untick the paid plug ins - they are all good , but best try them later one at a time

beachouse,
If applicable in your version, you may use the Common Tangents script in this set of free scripts:

Yes, that script works fine in CC, Jacob.

Thank you for confirming, Ton.
They should work for all versions from 10 to CC, but I (mis)remember someone once reporting (maybe wrongly) some version where they failed to work, hence the reservation. I have no clue which (if any), but it was some years ago, if it was.
