I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble selecting tools in Illustrator. This issue is commonly caused by a third-party app interfering with your keyboard. To solve this, you can try running your computer in Safe Mode (Mac/ Windows). This will prevent any third-party software or services from automatically loading or opening. If it works fine in Safe Mode, then you can open other apps one by one and see which one is conflicting with Illustrator. You can use Task Manager/ Activity Monitor to identify the culprit and then close or uninstall it on your user account. Once done, launch the app in normal mode.

Another cause could be due to corrupt preferences. In this case, you may try resetting them.
