My straight lines are messing up

When I try to create straight lines it messes up, but when they don't mess up if they're angled.

I'm not understanding your problem. In your screenshots I see 1) an oblique straight line selected by the Selection Tool (showing a bounding box), and 2) a horizontal straight line elected by the Direct Selection Tool. In what way are they "messing up"?
