Newbie question: is Illustrator used for these graphics?

I am curious if illustrator is the software being used for these fairly simple graphics?

I am an instructor for pre-apprentice/apprentices electricians and I need to start making or finding someone

who can make graphics for me. If it is illustrator how difficult would it be to make these graphics fairly quickly assuming

I became familiar with illustrator? If not can anybody point me in the right direction on the software I would use?

Just by looking at graphics we can only guess that it is indeed done in Illustrator. I will suggest you to stick with Illustrator and Adobe's products because:

  • software quality
  • tons of books and tutorials
  • lots of plugins
  • lots of users and experts who can help you

Above are some of advantages over competition.

"Software quality" in newest edition simply DO NOT EXIST! Software is buggy, slow and crashes on demand.

This kind of graphics You can do even in totaly free Inkscape, for that kind of job, illustrator will be simply overkill. Download and try thes free alternative, and than see what You need Or download trial for Illustrator and chec if it's suite You for the price which You need to pay.

Completely depends on whether and in which workflow you want to print it.

Inkscape still does not support a CMYK workflow (at least not without using Scribus for layout purposes). But this type of graphic could lead to a printed desaster when working in RGB.

If colour is a critical component in the drawings - which given they involve electrical set-ups it seems like they might... this is a valid point if you are looking to print these things as instructions for people.

Particularly those who may suffer from loss of colour or aren't able to distinguish certain shades or colours from each other.

As with most updates of software this can be the case... However I haven't personally experienced many illustrator specific issues on my PC... perhaps you should clarify what OS and specs etc your PC is using as this is clearly not a black and white answer?

As "Illustrator" stands for, i just want to make simple Illustrations. And it's pretty messy - You can't do almost anything without issues, and restarting software time to time. In previous versions i do not have issues like that.

And one more thing, You CAN export CMYK PDF file from inkscape, and it works just fine - I've done this some time ago, and it works just fine.

Just to clarify - what version of illustrator? CC or CS?

Also can you give me an example with screenshot of what:

a) counts as a simple illustration - purely because this is normally a question of individual perspective

b) what issues you experience?

I'm glad to hear that Inkscape supports CMYK PDF. However I would like to discuss and reach some conclusion as to Illustrators perceived bugs and limitations that may or may not currently exist.

Best wishes,

EW

CC 2017

Simple illustrations I'm meaning something like that: (ofcourse without visible Post Production which is done in PS).

Simple line art, and coloring, sometimes, pattern.

Color is done by simple objects filled with color.

I've experienced none of these issues. What system are you using? Any extra Plugins?

FWIW - I have less than half that RAM on my work computer (admittedly similar to you/slightly better specs for a laptop on my home rig) and I have had very few times or none that were directly traceable back to illustrator being the culprit...So this is why I have been puzzled as to why you get these problems...

What version of Illy CC 2017 do you have? What apps do you have running whilst using Illustrator? What are the dimensions of the illustrative work? How many illustrations do you have open at one time? Do you keep lots of cached stuff in the background? What anti virus etc do you use? Where are you saving your files? On the SSD or on a Network? Does Illy have Admin privileges?

Also what do you mean about "buggy pen tool" is this a reference to using a drawing tablet such as Wacom? or reference to the actual Pen/Path tool?

Best,

EW
