Pen Tool Issue when importing from external software?

So I had a student bring in a design from a non adobe software, she made paths using a pen tool, however when bringing into illustrator it seemed to close the paths and make the line unedible. Any thoughts on how to fix?

Could be a compound shape which caused this.
