Recent files not showing on start screen

I'm on a PC with Illustrator v 25.4.1 and I have the issue that I don't see the recent files on the start screen anymore.

They will show once when I uncheck and re-check the option to show the start screen when no files are open. But on the next session, the recent files are again not showing on the start screen.

Strangely enough, on a different machine, with exactly the same settings/preferences it IS showing correctly. The only difference between those two machines is the Windows 10 build and the GPU.

Any ideas?
