Releasing compound path causes hollow/transparent area to be filled in automatically

Hi - I have a compound path that I'm trying to release. Whenever I do, though, the transparent areas in the path are automatically filled in with color. It's only happening with this object. I have other objects that have transparent components, and this doesn't happen.

This is the object:

When I click 'release', this happens:

I need for the transparent areas to remain transparent

That is the nature of compound paths and it remains a secret to me how you can release other compound paths and keep the holes.

I think what Tony is getting at is they are supposed to be transparent but when he goes to release them, they are still filled with a solid color, in this case black.. I'm having the same problem, any ideas?

Why do you release them when you want holes?
