Selection tool keeps going AWOL in Tool Box

Since the update, I am so frustrated with Illustrator.

My selection tool keeps disappearing for some reason, so I'm only left with Direct Selection and variations. I've reset the workspace and still no go. So I have to set to a different workspace to get it back. Is there a new action that I'm unaware of? Or is there a fundamental way illustrator works (similar to constrain proportions now works in Photoshop).

It's an issue that you can't lock the toolbox. Click on the 3 dot button to pop up the configuration panel. From its menu you can reset the toolbox.

Thanks that's very helpful, but I still don't get where it's going, it wasn't an issue before. It happened again since I posted this and I was hyper-aware of what I was doing. And still can't figure out what I did.
