Shape Builder Performance

I recently fired up Illustrator after an update and noticed that the shape builder tool is unreasonably slow. It takes 3+ minutes to combine two simple shapes. Is there a know issue in the latest release?

Computer Specifications

  • Windows 10 Enterprise (x64)
  • Intel Core i7-3540M CPU @ 3.00GHz
  • 16.0 GB RAM

Illustrator Specifications

  • Illustrator 21.1.0 (64-bit)

EDIT: After actually timing it, it took well over 5 minutes.

It seems to be with the object(s) I am trying to build together. There are a lot of intersections; however, I've only tried to build a couple of shapes together and the result is the same. The above screenshot is an example of the object. Unfortunately, I can't share the entire piece. Again, the object as a whole is rather complex; however, I am simply trying to combine two shapes at a time.

Here is another section which you can see I am only trying to combine two shapes. The progress bar is after 3+ minutes...

Try turning off the GPU performance.
