Shaper Tool not working as expected

Greetings, oh mighty Illustrator lords.

This humble noobly noob comes seeking guidance. So it's time for amateur hour.

I've been trying to paint an artwork with the Shape Builder tool, but I have been unable to select certain spaces that should be contained within a closed path.

Those spaces are within the girl in the illustration.

Any help, or suggestions of other methods would be appreciated.

Try and use the live paint tool resp. the live paint selection tool.
