Small white square overlays every last command in Illustrator

Hi Community!

This has bugged me for years, and I can't find anything about it in any forum.  Whenever I paste an object onto the artboard, there will be a small white square indicating that command's x/y coordinates, such that when I move the artboard within the desktop, that same small white square will remain at the same x/y location, overlaid upon any artwork that is moved through that same neutral x/y coordinate.  If there's no object/artwork, i.e. just blank artboard, over that neutral x/y coordinate, then there's no square - only when an object intersects that coordinate does the square re-appear, superpositioned, thus blocking the artwork underneath it.  The square never changes size; it's about 1/16"x1/16" (yes, I am an autodidact of a certain age...) no matter what the magnification of the view.  It's white with a process-blue outline.

Whatever it's designed to tell me, it's the default setting, and I just don't care.  It is always, always in the way of a clean view of whatever I'm working on, such that I am finally taking the time to describe this in detail here.  I need to know how to turn it off.

Thanks to you veterans of any age who can dispatch this annoying feature of the program I depend most upon.

Can you show a screenshot? I'm unsure what you mean. It sounds like something to do with smart guides, but no smart guide labels appear just on pasting something.

Hi there,

Sorry about this frustration. Doug is right, we might need a screenshot to understand the situation better. If you are talking about this box (highlighted in red) showing information about X and Y coordinates, you can simply turn off Smart guides from View menu.

it doesn't occur with every paste, apparently; and then, when I noticed it reappear, when I pressed command+shift+4 to take a screenshot, it disappeared.

It isn't what you suggest, Srishti, but what I described: it doesn't contain coordinate information, but rather it is blank, and it stays in the same location in the control panel when the artboard is moved; however, it only appears when artwork, or an object, passes over the stationary coordinate position, but under the square, as it always appears above the object, superposed - then when there is no object at the coordinate position, no square.

I'm not insane.

now I've been able to determine that it does appear with a 'paste' command, but also that it disappears when I press the 'command' button.  Still, I want to know what it is, and to quash it.  Like a bug.  Forever.

Glad to hear that you found a workaround. I would still insist if you can share a small video of the issue in your free time. We can share it with our Product team for further investigation if required.
