Snap to

Since installing Illustrator 2015.3 I have noticed that Snap To doesn't work unless Smart Guides are turned on, even when zoomed in.

What am I missing here? I hate Smart Guides and prefer to work with them turned off.

I never really bothered about it , but assumed it was the other way around

ie I  thought it was the smart guides that would not work with the snap to on ?

Maybe you can have the smart guides on, but with the features that annoy you unchecked  in preferences >smart guides
