Those PNG files would be the result of exporting AI files, quite unlike vector or vector/raster artwork to export from AI.

How were they created?

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing. Would you mind sharing a few details along with the ones asked above by Monika & Jacob:

• Are these PNGs files embedded or linked in Illustrator? If not, please try embedding or relinking them.
• Are you using Ai 2018 and exporting these PNGs other than 72ppi? If yes, you may check out this helpx article (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/troubleshoot-export-issues.html) and try the solutions provided there.
