In Illustrator, when I drag text while holding Shift, it unexpectedly converts to area type only after exceeding a certain text size

Tried solutions:

  • Disabled "Auto Size New Area Type" preference.
  • Released Shift before dragging text box.
  • Reset preferences.
  • Checked for conflicting keyboard shortcuts.

  • Illustrator version: [ v 28.2 ]

Is this a Large Canvas document?

Did you already reboot the system, create a new document, create a new text object and checked if it does the same?

Tried everything you suggested - reboot, new doc, new text object, still stuck! Text to area shift issue persists beyond specific size, even in new docs. Could it be related to A3 canvas size? Font compatibility? Preferences setting?

I have just tried it myself.

So just how large is your text? (in point)

There is a limit of how large a text can get and you might be hitting it. And then what you see might not be area text, but just the text size not getting any bigger.

The solution is in your case that you are simply hitting the limit.

In order to get bigger text, apply the transform effect to the text object.

Hi, thank you responding. I'll explore workarounds within the limitations and appreciate any other insights you might have. For now I am working within text size limits. Thanks! Unfortunately, even the transform effect didn't work.
