Text Won't Expand/Ungroup

I haven't been able to find an answer that has helped. I'm trying to create 3D Text. I cannot get the text to expand. First, I typed the letter, then added the 3D effects, then tried to hit "Expand" but could only hit "Expand Appearence." Then I typed the letter first, hit "Expand" then added the 3D effects, hit "ungroup" and the letter is still un-editable. I want to change the shadow from dark gray to light gray and the only thing that will do that is expanding and ungrouping the letter and nothing has worked to be able to do so.

You could try the Classic 3D effect.
