I heard from a fellow graphic designer a little while ago that they'd had problems when sending artwork that included transparencies to repro, I'm thinking of including some transparent areas (maybe 50% transparent) on a piece of artwork I am doing and just want to know if there is anything I should know before sending it to repro?

Can transparencies be tricky when printing (professionally)?

The answer to this question depends entirely on who is printing the job. In the large advertising agency in which I've been working for over 20 years I have never seen a job that I've been involved with, that has transparency of any sort in it, run into problems when output. Transparency within the Adobe programs has been around for long enough at this point that most competent printers should not have a problem. This is true whether they are outputting from the Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign files directly or creating a pdf first. That being said, however, a lot will still depend on the level of equipment and competency of the printer that you use. Talk with your printer first. Ask to see examples of their work which involve transparency.

I would recommend saving a PDF file that looks like the way you want it printed.

You can also ask the Printer or Repro house if they are GWG compliant.

If they are not sure, there is a free way to check this for them selves, al related info can be fount on this site: https://www.gwg.org/workflow-tools/overview-of-gwg-compliant-applications/
