Using pathfinder > merge results in many new points created around curved edges

Hello! I am having an issue with merging shapes. The two shapes are simple, and don't have as many points as the result. So when I go to merge them in pathfinder, it results in multiple new points around the curved edges instead of bezier curves. Would love to know what I'm doing wrong here! Thank you.
