Weird things happening when I edit text

Whenever I edit text, these boxes appear following my mouse, that oddball overlay...

Sometimes, my background on a layer behind disappears too!

Zooming in and out or turning on and off a layer fixes it but I need a permanent fix

Weird questions again and again:
• WHICH version of Illustrator is in use?

• WHAT platform/OS is in use?
…guess its an GPU problem? did you turn on/off this option to check?
