Hi!  I'm relatively new to Illustrator.  I'm not sure what I did - I hit a "wrong key" and my workspace (not the tools and panels) turned white!  Originally I had a medium gray with a rectangle defining my artboard.  That rectangle is now gone, and the background is annoyingly glaring.  How do I get back to the gray and the artboard rectangle?  I'm using the Illustrator program on a iMAC desktop computer.  Thanks so much - Marilyn

To add a little background to the other answers, the setting in Preferences is under User Interface > Canvas Color: Match User Interface Brightness. So this is your default setting that normally shows a gray canvas with a white artboard. When you hide the artboard (using the tips already provided), the canvas turns white temporarily, and the artboard boundary is hidden.
