Why does my document save without the background?

I have a gradient as the background of my document, no transparencies. I'm trying to save it as a printable PDF, and everytime I do so, it shows the background as white.

I'm going to File > Save As > Adobe PDF

What's the issue and how can I fix this?

You will need a filled path as the background for your work. You cannot use Simulate Paper Color from the setup preferences.

I checked the preferences. Simulate Paper Color was not selected.

Is that a free form gradient?

Does it show when you open the PDF in Acrobat?
