Working with graphic materials for 3D object wrap

Hi, I'm trying to wrap  text and some very basic graphics on a simple sphere. 
The text gets completly distorted for some reason. I've tried converting the text to a shape, symbol, ext but nothing works. Any idea?? Here is a test example

3D & materials. Classic won't create a sphere, right?

Classic can create a sphere and also does better rendering of labels.

Thanks, I've created a sphere in classic (with the help of YouTube..) and it did solved the problem.
It's now wrapping any graphics includig gradients.

You can create a sphere in classic by revolving half a circle.
