Is there no way to have a transparent background? For Procreate you can just uncheck the background & whatever is above it will have a transparent background. I make a shape & just want the shape but the white background is still there. I cannot figure out how to get rid of it if there is a way.

For me it does it automatically when I export as PNG - you'd have to put a coloured rectangle on a base layer if you wanted otherwise I guess.

The background is always transparent unless you add an object that covers the background. The canvas always appears white when you're working, but if there's no object, it is transparent.
As Firebird Graphics mentions above, if you want to maintain transparency when you export, you need to export in a format that supports transparency.

I'm using Adobe Illustrator For iPad and created the simplest of illustrations - single layer with just three words of black text - and I can't for the life of me get it exported as a PNG with a transparent background. Are you guys using the latest iPad version? I just got the product today.

Are you selecting "save image" after choosing export as PNG? You then have to view the image fully in your iPad photos to see the transparency, gallery view will show it with a white background. And not all iPad apps will support it so it depends where you use it from there.

Thank you for responding. Yes, I'm successfully saving them to Apple Photos. I'm using Illistrator for Ipad version 1.1.
I spent an hour yesterday on this problem and discovered it's a bug.
What I discovered was that if either of the artboard's dimensions is 300 pixels or less transparency breaks and that artboard becomes white.
If you would, could you try and replicate it for me with a very simple test?
1) create an artboard 301 x 301
2) Add a single piece of text to the artboard and make it some wild color
3) Save it and then check its transparency.
Then duplicate the above but make the artboards:
300 x 301
301 x 300
When I do that the resultant PNG loses transparency, turning white.
I logged a bug report with Adobe.

I'm so sorry but I put the wrong dimensions in my earlier posting about performing a test.
The problem appears when either dimension is 360 pixels or less.
If you would, could you try and replicate it for me with a very simple test?
1) create an artboard 361 x 361
2) Add a single piece of text to the artboard and make it some wild color

360 x 361
361 x 360
When I do that the resultant PNG loses transparency, turning white.
Once again, sorry.

It does that to me also - yes it must be a bug.

Must be a bug with Photos though - when I emailed them to myself the transparency was there.

You're right! Good catch. They're also transparent when you import the PNG back into an Illustrator project.

Probably to do with optimisation or something similar.

I'll remove by bug report from Adobe Illustrator.

Hi! I solved this by saving the PNG image from Procreate to Files, and then import the image from the Files app into the Illustrator project.
Happy editing!
