Illustrator Transparency Mask Not Working

Hi! So I am running into a problem that I've lost days on for a relatively simple task. I normally create opacity masks all the time, however following a recent app update... when I follow the normal steps, the result is just an all white image. The gradient is there, but nothing within it changes the result of a white block. If I invert, I see the image but it doesn't change with edits either. Any tips? I'm sure some preset configuration or setting change is to blame, but anything would help. Thanks!
