Hello! Has anyone had success importing endnotes (saved from Endnote - it seems to become a Bibliography in Word) to InDesign in such a way that they maintain their links from superscript to the reference in the Biblio? I used InCopy to import from Word, and there appear to be links on the superscript, but they don't translate to links in a PDF (which is the final result we need). Any ideas appreciated!

Are you making this PDF from InDesign or Word?

I've tried exporting to PDF from InCopy, as well as InDesign. No joy.

Did did you choose Adobe PDF (interactive)?

Absolutely - normally links work without issue, however because this is from the "Endnote" program, it seems to not link them. In InCopy though, there are triangular link symbols around the superscript numbers (I'm new to InCopy, as I was hoping it might help translate the links) so it makes me think that some of the code is preserved. I just want them to connect in InDesign for the PDF Export (interactive, yes :)).

Let's back up. How did you get the Word file into InCopy? You should have chosen file > open. That would give you options as shown in this screenshot.

Thanks, Yes - I imported it properly. Reminder: the "endnotes" are generated by a program called Endnote, which is a plugin for Word. It generates a bibliography, but not endnotes in the way Word typically understands them. Therefore InDesign does not see them as endnotes. However in InCopy, there are tags around the superscript numbers that show it knows "something" is there. I want to know if you have successfully reconnected the superscript numbers as live links in InDesign when imported from Word using Endnotes (the plugin, not Word's own endnotes).
I have successfullly imported Word endnotes and footnotes before, and exported them from InDesign as an interactive PDF. This is a different animal. I'm trying not to manually relink 143 references.

I did not realize that you were referring to a Word plugin, but I cannot eliminate that as the issue, unfortunately. Try to create a new Word file and add some end notes manually without the plugin. If that file imports properly, along with the links then I think we have a culprit.

Hi Bob - I'm sorry it wasn't clear - it's in the first line of my post as well as the title. If you haven't had experience with this plugin unfortunately you can't help me.

It was the name that threw me. Have you contacted them?

It threw me too - the client kept mentioning their endnotes, which I thought "yeah, endnotes, that's normal", when they meant a totally different program. I have contacted the plugin maker, but since they only deal with Word, they have no clue.

Sorry, I wish I could help but it sounds like it might be injecting some kind of code that's interfering. Just curious, have you tried creating a PDF directly from Word?

Yes, it works from Word, but the connection is lost when imported to InCopy and InDesign. However, the layout is impossible in Word.

I can't help thinking that there's a way around it. Have you tried unchecking foot notes or end notes and seeing if one of them works by itself?
And yes, I know I grasping at straws. 🙂

No joy there either - thanks for trying, but I'm going to go back and tell them it can't be done.
