AI Denoise "not compatible with this.." - I shoot in .NEF

Hi,

I always shoot in RAW (.NEF) and as soon as I could try I used the AI Denoise function on some photos: it worked properly.

Now, everytime I want to use this function I have a message that says "not compatible with this..." and doesn't even finish the sentence. I can't use it anymore and I don't know why. Why at first it worked and now it doesn't? I never changed my shooting settings and I would really need to use this!

Thank you so much

Yes, this is most likely reduced size raw files. They have to be demosaiced to be processable, otherwise the Bayer filter pattern gets mangled up.

I use Sony, not Nikon, but only full resolution raw files are accepted by Denoise. They can be compressed or uncompressed, .arw or .dng - but they have to be full size.

Currently, the new Denoise AI can run only on Bayer and X-Trans RAW images. Not any form of compressed RAW, not converted DNG. This is explained in the documentation:

This doesn't seem to be the case in Feb 2024.  Denoise AI doesn't want to process ARW files from my A7iv no matter if they are saved as full size, or any of the lossless compression formats.  I get the usual not compatible message.  I've had this working (albeit slowly) but it's not usable at the moment except via the manual sliders and I can't see why.  Using Lightroom Classic 13.1 with Camera Raw 16.1 on a PC running Win10.

Here are the options in the a7r v menu. I've just retested which work in Denoise:

My LR 13.1 / Mac Denoises sample Sony A7 IV raws from dpreview.com without issue, e.g. this one:

Attach a sample problem .arw here, or if the forum won't let you, upload it to Drobox, Google Drive, or similar and post the sharing link here. We can see if it Denoises in other LR installations and narrow down the issue.

Related to the previous replies, triple-check that you are in fact editing a .nef file and not a JPEG or other non-raw format. Look at the full file name in the Metadata panel, or type "i" in Loupe view.

There are many, many reports here over the years of camera settings getting accidentally reset and people editing JPEGs without realizing it (the default LR settings don't make it obvious).
