Assistance with Syncing Keywords from Lightroom Classic to Lightroom (Cloud)

New Here ,
Apr 05, 2024 Apr 05, 2024

I primarily use Lightroom Classic for organizing my photo and video library. I have diligently assigned keywords to categorize and manage my media efficiently.

My intention is to share my media with others through Lightroom (cloud) while ensuring that the keywords are synced along with the files. This is crucial for facilitating easy search and retrieval of specific photos or videos.

But the keywords are not syncing from Lightroom Classic to Lightroom (cloud) automatically.

also:
Videos require manual importation into Lightroom (cloud), as automatic syncing doesn't include them.

Syncing of keywords between Lightroom Classic and Lightroom cloud is not possible. You can get the current Lightroom Classic keywords into the cloud as a one-time-only upload when you first sync an image, but apart from that there is no subsequent syncing of new or altered keywords.

To get this one time only upload, do the following.

Step 1: Make sure you do not have any smart previews yet for the selected images.

Step 2: Select the images in Lightroom Classic and choose 'Metadata - Save Metadata to Files'.

Step 3: Add the selected images to a synced collection.

Hi Johan, thanks for the information. Since you sent this last April and its been a few months now, is it still the same?

I mean, Lightroom Classic and the cloud dont sync the keywords?

Best regards

It's actually worse. In the past, you could 'upload' keywords from Lightroom Classic to the cloud once. They did not sync (i.e. changes made in both directions), but at least you could get them in the cloud using a certain procedure when the image was synced the very first time. That is also no longer possible.

Yes, and to be clear in one place: keywords do not sync any more either way between LrC and an associated Lr cluster (Lr desktops, Lr Mobiles, Lr Web), each is now in its own bubble wrt keywords:

  • Adding a keyword to, or modifying a keyword of an image in Lr (either synced from LrC or imported directly to Lr) does not propagate to LrC.
  • When syncing a new image from LrC to Lr, keywords are simply not included.

Inexplicably and maddeningly, both before the total separation of keywords and currently, if you modify the keywords of synced images in LrC, they go through a sync process (the sync icon activates, and you can watch the number of images tick down as the keyword change is "synced"). Whatever keyword data is being synced, it does not go to anyplace where the user can ever see it again. If (guessing here) keywords are part of a kind of checksum or ID of the LrC image which needs to be synced, then it's a design failure to continue to have LrC keywords affect the checksum. Even if the bandwidth is minimal (I haven't measured), it's a waste of resources to clog the LrC sync queue with operations which have no functional value to the user.

"if you modify the keywords of synced images in LrC, they go through a sync process (the sync icon activates"

I've tested this and do not see any evidence of syncing as a result of only changing a keyword.

Hi Johan, do you know since when this is no longer possible exactly? Can I revert to a previous version of Classic (14.0 or even earlier?) to have this feature back functionning (uploading keywords to the cloud once)?

Possibly in October 2024 the ability to sync keywords (with Import to Lr) was deprecated entirely.

".....synced the very first time. That is also no longer possible. ".

Keyword sync was not associated with a Lightroom version, so installing a previous version will not be of help.

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 14.5.1, Photoshop 26.10, ACR 17.5, Lightroom 8.5, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 15.1.1 .

It's the new sync engine in Adobe Creative Cloud that no longer supports that. No version of Lightroom Classic can do this anymore.

This feature was critical for the work I do. I am sometimes elsewhere on my iPad doing work but now can't find images I’ve tagged. It used to work that syncing from classic would bring the keywords along.

What can I say? It doesn't work anymore and as I do not work for Adobe, there is nothing I can do about that. Captions do sync, so perhaps you could use captions rather than keywords?

I'm having a few problems with synchronize images from lightroom classic to lightroom online.

What I ultimately want is photos and video's + keywords from lightroom classic to lightroom online.

When I make a collection of the images I want in the cloud (and I check the box with sync to lightroom)

Sometimes some images do show up in lightroom online (3 or 4 photos of a larger collection) the videos don't show up in lightroom online anyway.

Extra info: my catalog contains 9660 images in total.

It says I already have 10,025 images synced, but there is nothing in my lightroom online... I can't delete that either. (I only have some documents in the adobe cloud)

You cannot sync videos from Lightroom Classic to the cloud. Lightroom Classic only syncs smart previews, not originals, and a 'smart preview video' does not exist. To sync videos (or original images) to the cloud, you'll need to install Lightroom desktop as well and sync them up from this application. Also note that keywords do not sync between Lightroom Classic and the cloud.

I think I found a solution!!  The latest version of Lightroom Classic doesn't sync keywords even once anymore, and I tried everything I could think of to work around this huge problem.  After all, what is the use of having 50,000 images at your fingertips if you can't find what you're looking for?  Try this:  Open Lightroom Classic.  Open LR on your desktop as well.  Physically drag and drop images from Classic to LR.  Voila!  All your keywords will be there.  No, they don't sync, but that's ok with me.  Good luck!!

I believe you can also sync the keywords from the file, if you are saving
them on a xmp file on Ligthroom.
So you create the keytwords on classic, save the XMP file and push it into
the Lightroom (not classic).
Still, I wish Adobe would sync it automatically...
Best regards,

@alexandref22739761 No, that used to work but it doesn't work anymore. The suggestion from @ScanVT is not a good solution either, unfortunately. What this does is upload the original to Lightroom, and so the original will be synced to the cloud! You'll soon run out of cloud space if you have the 20GB plan...
