I am using LR CC 2015 on an old Mac running OS Yosemite that cannot be updated (updating from Mountain Lion to Yosemite pretty much destroyed the performance of this machine, which is now painfully slow, even with more RAM added). I cannot drag and drop photos from the filmstrip to a collection as shown in current tutorials. Is there another way to add a photo to a collection? I have searched the menus to no avail. There is one menu item called "add photo to target collection." But I cannot figure out how to set a collection as a "target collection" or even find an explanation of what that is.
You should be able to drag images from the grid view to the collection. I've never tried dragging them from the film strip. If you right-click on any collection you can designate it as the target collection. Then, any image that you right-click on and choose the option to add to the target collection will be added to that specified collection. By default, the target collection is the Quick collection. But that can be changed at will.

To add to Jim's reply-
I believe that 'Drag from the filmstrip' has always worked (I am on Classic v8 and it works for me), but like all "Drag or Move" operations with the mouse, you must click on the image area of a thumbnail to drag, and not on any grey border.
Also, after setting any Collection as the Target Collection (showing the + sign) you can add photos to this Target Collection by selecting and pressing keyboard , either singly or with multiple selections.
Also, If you hover the mouse on a thumbnail photo, clicking on the grey dot will add the photo to the Target Collection.
Note: Be aware- Both the and (Grey dot) are 'Toggles' ie. They both 'Add' and 'Remove' a photo from the Target Collection.
Select a photo, hit - it is "IN", hit a second time - it is "OUT".
