Changing colors while keeping natural skin tones?

I want to change colors in my photos and I am experimenting with doing this with the tone curve, the Color panel, split toning, and under Camera Calibration. Are these all just different ways of doing the same thing, OR are there reasons to sometimes use some vs. the others? I want to make sure that I keep skin tones looking natural.
