Export edit and import keywords structured.

Nov 12, 2024 Nov 12, 2024

Hi group,

I'm always searching a possibility to export my keywords in a structured way (like I see it in Lightroom), edit them in a text editor like BBEdit and import it with the new structure again.

I miss on every keyword an id and a parent id.

Is it possible to do that in a easy way, or should I have learn to develope a plugin?

Did LightRoom manage internal the keywords with id or only with the keyword himself?

Thanks

Stefan

Lightroom does not have that ability, and has no plugin capability. Lightroom Classic does, and without any need for a plugin, but it does support plugins.

Which Lightroom do you mean?

The built-in commands Metadata > Export/Import Keywords let you export the current keyword list, edit the list in a text editor or spreadsheet (be careful, there are LR glitches with UTF-8 CSV files), and then import the new list. However, any changes to the names of keywords or their hierarchical structure will result in new keywords being created in Keyword List, not to changes to the existing keywords.

If you want to change existing keywords and their structure, while preserving their assignments to photos, you'll need to use the Any Tag plugin's Export/Import Keywords commands.

Hi,

thanks, but this isn't what I'm looking for.
I need the possibility to export the structure, edit the tag AND the structure and import it again.
I thinkm, internal LightRoom did not us a id for the Tag - in other cases I need to translate the Tags for export outside of Germany.

I think that this is an helpful feature, because of export images and imprt them into a DAM system.

Me: "If you want to change existing keywords and their structure, while preserving their assignments to photos, you'll need to use the Any Tag plugin's Export/Import Keywords commands."

You: "I need the possibility to export the structure, edit the tag AND the structure and import it again."

This is precisely what the Any Tag plugin's Import/Export Keywords commands do -- did you try it?  You can rearrange the hierarchy and rename keywords without affecting the assignment of keywords to photos. It uses the internal database identifiers of the keywords to maintain the relationship between your changes and the original keywords.

My workaround for this pain is doing all the keyword eding (just the amimals and plants taxa in three languages) in Excel where all names in three languages are combined in a single string. Whenever keywording is needed I copy the vstring and paste it in LRC's keyword editing field, job done.

Yes, you have to take care of the hirachical order in LRC as well.
