Files couldn't be found message when exporting

Community Beginner ,

I'm trying to export photos in Lightroom an ke ep getting a message that the file could not be found.  However, there is no missing photo icon on the photos and the files  are actually in.   the correct folder on my external hard drive.  What could be going on here?  Everything I look  up shows how to relink a photo but the photo doesn't show it's missing when I look at it in the library grid view.

Hi there,

Would you mind checking the folders in the Library module to check if any of the folders have a question mark on them? Also, are you facing the same issue with any images saved in folders on your computers internal storage?

If the folders also do not show any question marks, you can try to import a few images from the internal storage of the computer and check if you are able to export those files.

Regards,

Nikunj

There are no question marks on folders in the Library module. I successfully exported an image stored on computer's internal storage. So what does that mean?

Are you looking at the photo in a folder or in a collection?

Ah, should have asked first. Are you using smart previews? You need access to the source photo when exporting, Indicator that it is not connected is a different symbol, and not a samart preview user, so I forget.

Check that an external drive contains source images is connected.

IMG_0654.HEIC I took a screen shot to show that I'm looking at the photo from my external hard drive, not smart preview.

Screen shot wouldn't load. I'm going into my external hard drive and into the folder directly to export..

The fact that your image is on the next general hard drive makes me wonder if in fact you ARE working with a smart preview with the external hard drive disconnected. If that external hard drive is not connected or is not being recognized, it's possible that you could be working with a smart preview. Something to consider or double check. Look underneath the Histogram, it will indicate whether or not you are working with a smart preview. Please don't be annoyed if you are certain you are not working with smart previews.

Ok. Now I'm real confused. I just decided to import some more photos from my external drive. When I click import and then go to the external hard drive none of my folders are listed and it says no photos found. I can go into my external hard drive from my Mac and see everything there. What is wrong?

Probably an unsupported format. Try JPEG, PNG.

I was trying to import photos from my external hard drive that I've never imported before into Lightroom.  Shows no photos on that drive.  Yet, I can go into it from Finder on my mac and see all the photos.

It seems that Lightroom is not able to read or write to the external while. Since the export worked with images stored on the computers local drive, it may be an issue with the permissions on the external drive you are using.

Problem solved after talking to support at Adobe.  Problem was caused by new Catalina update for Mac.  Permissions had to manually be granted for Lightroom to access my external hard drive.  Thanks for everyone's input!

Glad the issue was resolved by granting the permissions manually. Feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance.
