Do a right click on the appropriate picture and find the option "Go to Collection". It should contain the list of collections where that photo is.

To add to Axel's correct answer-

If you have Badges showing on the thumbnails, you can-

1) Hover the cursor pointer on the Collection Badge to see a notification- [Photo is in Collection]

2) Single-click the mouse cursor on the Collection Badge to see the List of Collections containing that photo. (also without needing to Go-to the Collection)

Thank you wobertc, however there are no collection badges on my thumbnails.

Happy with the right click method but now curious how I switch on the Collection Badge, can't find it in settings anywhere ?

If you're looking at the Filmstrip, the option to "Show Badges" is on the Interface Tab of the Lightroom Preferences. Note, however, that if the size of the Filmstrip is too small, badges will not be shown even if that Preferences option has been set. Increase the size of the Filmstrip to fix.

If you're looking in the Grid, there's an on/off option in the View>View Options>Grid View tab>Cell Icons section>Thumbnail Badges.

In Filmstrip Show Badges is ticked, and I've made the strip as large as it will go but it only shows Badges for 'Tags' 'Edits' and 'GPS' but no Collections.

In Grid/ cell Icons the Thumbnail Badges is ticked, but they also only show the same badges as the film strip.

If you have already selected the collection, the collection badge will only show if the image is also in another collection. If the image is ONLY in the collection you've currently got selected, the collections badge isn't necessary, and so isn't displayed.
