GPU stops working when trying to add a mask

New Here ,

Lightroom 14.5.1

Windows 11 Home 24H2 26100.4946

Graphic Processor Intel Arc B580 (32.0.101.7028) - 12 GB Latest driver - Windows says that it is working fine.

When I start Lightroom the Use Graphics Processor and Use GPU for Preview is set to Auto

When I add a mask like 'Sky' nothing happens - no red markng in the sky and when checking Prefereces again  the Use Graphics Processor is Off and it tells me that Graphics Avvelerator is disabled due to an error.

I have check the support note 'Troubleshoot graphics processor (GPU) and graphics driver issues | Lightroom Classic' and tried the solutions - but nothing seems to fix the problem.

regards

Magnus

Hi Magnus, thanks for reaching out!

Please go to the Help menu in Lightroom Classic, then System Info, and copy the text. You can share the info with us by either pasting it as a reply here or in a text file and sharing the file with us.

You mentioned that the GPU drivers are up to date. Did you install the drivers from Intel's website, or are you using the Windows drivers (which are typically installed along with the Windows updates)?

Thanks,
Nikunj

"Intel(R) Arc(TM) Arc(TM) Graphics Graphics (32.0.101.7028)"

While that's the latest graphics driver, it's not "WHQL Certified", which means it gets somewhat less testing:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000093158/graphics.html

Try installing the previous (WHQL Certified) driver:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/785597/863047/intel-arc-iris-xe-graphics-windows.ht...

Also, delete the temporary files TempDisableGPU3 and TempDisableGPU2:

I sent this by mail last week and havn't got any respose. GPU is downloaded from Intel. I post the system info down here.

Hi,

I’ve updated to the WHQL Certified Driver and checked that none of the mentioned files exists in

AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\GPU.

But the problem is still there. Same thing occurs: GPU is on when I start – after trying a mask like ‘Sky’ it turns it off and I get no red marking on the sky..

I checked the logs in AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\logs

And find a lot of errors like this:

*** Error: dng_exception (200025) in cr_gpu_tile_render_task ***

*** GL Error: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED (hr=0x887a0005), Device removed reason: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG (hr=0x887a0006): CreateCommittedResource ***

*** GL Error: CreateCommittedResource ***

Regards

Magnus

Magnus,

Based on the information you've provided, it sounds like you're experiencing a specific and persistent issue where Lightroom is disabling your Intel Arc GPU due to an error, even though your drivers are up-to-date and Windows reports the card is working fine. This is a known issue that can occur with certain hardware and software configurations.

Here's a breakdown of the problem and some potential solutions beyond the standard troubleshooting steps you've already tried:

Understanding the Problem

Driver Discrepancy: While your driver version (32.0.101.7028) is the "latest" according to Windows, it might not be the most stable or compatible one with Lightroom's specific GPU acceleration features. Sometimes, a slightly older, more stable driver can work better than the very newest release, especially with new GPU architectures like Intel Arc.

Lightroom's GPU Caching: Lightroom creates a cache of GPU information and settings. If this cache gets corrupted, it can cause the program to incorrectly identify a problem with the GPU, leading to it being disabled.

Windows' Role: Even with a clean driver install, Windows 11's own graphics settings and power management plans can sometimes interfere with how applications utilize the GPU. The new Windows 11 24H2 update might have introduced a change that's causing this conflict.

Solutions to Try (Beyond the Standard Adobe Guide)

Try a Different Intel Arc Driver Version:

Do not rely on Windows Update. Go directly to the Intel website and download a slightly older, but still recent, driver for your Intel Arc B580. Look for a version released a few months prior to your current one.

Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller): Before installing the older driver, use a tool called DDU to completely and cleanly remove all traces of your current Intel graphics driver. This is a crucial step to prevent any lingering files from causing issues. You can find DDU by doing a quick web search. It's a free and widely used tool for this purpose.

Reset Lightroom's Preferences:

Hold down the Shift + Alt (Windows) keys immediately after double-clicking the Lightroom Classic icon to launch the program.

You will be presented with a dialog box asking if you want to reset your preferences. Confirm that you do.

This will reset all your settings, including the GPU preferences, and may clear the corrupted cache that's causing the problem.

Adjust Windows Graphics Settings:

Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics.

Under "Add an app," select Desktop app and browse to the Lightroom Classic executable (usually in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom Classic).

Click on Lightroom Classic in the list and then click Options.

Set the graphics preference to High performance and save the changes. This ensures Windows is prioritizing your dedicated GPU for Lightroom.

Disable Onboard Graphics (If Applicable):

If your system has an integrated GPU in addition to the Intel Arc card, you might need to disable the integrated GPU in your computer's BIOS/UEFI settings. This can help prevent conflicts where Lightroom might be trying to use the wrong graphics processor. Be careful when changing BIOS settings, and consult your motherboard's manual if you're unsure.

Check for Windows Updates (Again):

Even though you have 24H2, check for any new cumulative updates or optional driver updates. Microsoft may have released a hotfix that addresses compatibility issues with specific hardware.
