Grids have different origins

Participant ,

I have the "Show Grids always" set in the Development Module.

The size of the grid is the same as the default, which is 37

I then go to crop the image.

The grid size is the same, but the origin of the grid is different, so the Grid overlay is completely different.

This is quite annoying. I can't see any way in which I can fix the Grid origin to be the same in the two different views. Is there any article that explains how the origin is set for Grids (or how that can be set)?

Thanks for any help

William

Please show us a screen shots of what you are seeing.

As far as I know there is No Default grid size (well there may be the first time you call up the grid but if you change the Grid Size, by holding down the Ctrl key, it stays that size until you change it again.

In the Crop tool it is a totally different grid that can only be changed by using the O (that is the lower case oh key) key to cycle through the options. It seems that one of those option is a grid size around 37. At least it is on my system with the image I have selected. Actually a Develop mod grid size around 40 is about the same as one of the options in the crop tool.

So try the o key.

The grid origin seems to be the same for both grids (Center of photo) but the opacity/thickness of the lines alters the grid.

The best match I found is for the develop grid to be set to size 40 opacity 100

You may want to experiment yourself a bit more with the sizes.

Upon further expermentation it seems that the opacity can be reduced.

It looks like you need to set opacity to 100 first then set the grid size then reduce opacity as desired.

Thanks for the tips. I had tried to set the grid to different sizes. The grid as displayed between normal viewing in Development module and the crop view is somewhere between 40 and 41. Rather annoying that it doesn't default to at least one of the sizes in Development. The default grid size when you first turn it on is 37.

All of the other "grids" - thirds, etc - all adjust correctly between the two different viewing modes, so I'd consider this a bug. For consistency, it should be one size (as set in Development) and that is retained as you go to crop the image.

I would also expect that as you resize the view of the the image, the grid scales with you (just as it does with any of the other grid views)... It doesn't do that, rather the grid stays a constant size as you resize the view of the image (and going from "Development" to "Crop" does reisze the view, even to a small unavoidable degree). Seems rather odd to me...

Its also kind of weird to me that the "grid" display in the crop tool is on its own grid, which can be completely different than the grid I am using everywhere else in Development. And this is a further inconsistency.

The reason it matters for me, is that I am aligning horizontal lines from different images across paper folds, and I don't want lines that are not matching. Aside from going into PS, or tweaking the layouts in InD, I'm just going back and forwards between cropping and Development, and this gets error prone across multiple images, so I'd request that this be fixed. Please 😉

Thanks!

That Default grid size only shows the first time you turn the grid line on. If you change the size by holding down the Ctrl key on your keyboard then using your mouse to adjust the grid size in the Pop Up option box at the top of the image viewing area the grid size stay to what you set it to. Same for the Opacity setting.

So there really isn't a Default Grid size in the Develop module. Once changed is stay to the size it was set and there is no Reset option, button or whatever, to go back to whatever it was set to when you first installed LR and called up the grid pattern.

Neither of those Grid options in the Develop module, Grid Size or Opacity, has any effect on the Grid that is displayed in the Crop Tool. The only option for the Crop Tool grid is to Cycle through the 7 different grid patterns using the O (Oh key. The key between the Eye ( I ) and P.e.e ( P ) keys) key.
