High GPU and CPU usage in Develop when idle.

With v12.3 and running Ventura 13.3.1a, Classic is using a massive amount of cpu/gpu when viewing an image in Develop. On my M1 Max/64GB, Lr is doing nothing and using 65% GPU and 500% CPU. I can let the machine idle for as long as i want, and the usage doesn't change. Nothing is happening in Lr other than viewing the image in Develop. 

If i render Smarts and set the pref to use SP in Develop, the issue does not change. 

Does anyone know what's happening here?

Not happening here in 12.3. I get the expected spikes when browsing, but it settles immediately.

But then, there are so many things that can potentially run in the background these days (face recognition, syncing, what have you). I have all of that turned off.

In addition to the background operations GoldingD mentioned (which you check by clicking the identity plate to drop down the background operations menu), there are a couple of preferences that also enable more background operations. When the settings highlighted below are enabled, Lightroom Classic pre-caches to enhance frame-by-frame responsiveness, by taking advantage of when a CPU has a very high number of cores (like on an M1 Max) sitting around looking for something to do. If you don’t want these to happen, disable these too.

On my M1 Pro, I generally do not see overuse of the CPU cores. Because the M1 Max has 10 CPU cores, I think 500% usage can be interpreted as using only half the total CPU capacity. (Because on macOS, 100% means the equivalent of one core in full use, and 400% would be four cores fully used.)

I would try resetting the LrC preference file. Doing so will rule out most of the usual suspects. You can use method 1 described in https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/setting-preferences-lightroom.html

I have a similar issue (also Mac OS 13.3.1 (a) and LrC 12.3).

 

Because of recent high RAM usage of LrC after relative short edit sessions, I have activity monitor open all the time.

With GPU acceleration on the ram usage with not mmuch more than LrC open goes into the orage (medium memory pressure) on my 32 GB mac mini M2 pro, and thus unnecessary swap usage and ssd wear.

 

Anyway, while resuming work today (Mac was in Sleep mode) I noticed continuous ± 80% GPU usage while LrC was in the develop module, inactive on another desktop (so not even visible). It dropped immediatly when switching to library view.

 

It was a Canon raw file (CR2).
GPU usage returns when reentering Develop.
Problem goed away when switching images in Delop (returning to 1st image with problem behaves nicely now)
But the problem returns when the original image is reopened from LIbrary to Develop.
So cleary something wrong.

 

It would also be nice to have more info withing the activity monitor of LrC; like Apple's Aperture use to have.
(e.g. genereating previews ...)

Small update:

enable/disbale Generating previews in parallel did nothing.

 

But when selectively dsiabling GPU acceleration while idle in develop, it switches:

Full GPU support (view edit, export) - ±100% (± one core) CPU, 80% GPU
only edit and view: 900% cpu (so almost all cores), 70% GPU

finally disabling GPU View; cpu and GPU drops to just a few %.

Re-enabling (full) GPU acceleration, switch to libray and re-entering develop to the same (problem) image: HIGH GPU usage when idle.

Has the file been edited?

 

If yes, then it would be help if you would export the problem file as a DNG, then upload same to a cloud service such as Drobox. You'lll also need to provide a share link to same in order that we can access the file.

Same problem here... switching from library to dev module makes my 16" M1 Pro 32GB GPU flying to 100% usage and making editing very slow, RAM exploding (using 25GB juste after 2 photos edited...) 

If someone finds a solution it would be awesome because it's a huge problem when it takes 4-5 secondes just to see the next photo... 

That computer should be fast enough to edit in confort and now it is a real pain... Lightroom Classic needs to be fixed asap

Same Issue here I can leve it site doing nothing and it is at max CPU usage. I use REVIT 2024 and it does not tax my systerm as much
