Hi all! Hope everyone's having a great day!

My workflow sometimes iterate between lightroom and photoshop.

(Edit in lightroom → edit in photoshop → save psd (it will auto import psd back to lightroom) → edit the psd in lightroom again → edit in photoshop → save new psd → repeat )

I want my second psd file named as {Filename}_PS_002; instead now it always saved as {Filename}_PS_001_PS_001

This is my current setting under edit externally file renaming

I've tried a few different methods and I've tried finding discussion about this with no luck...

Please anyone know the solution to this?

Thanks in advance!

The problem is that you edit the PSD image in Photoshop again, so at that point the filename of that PSD image is already the original file name plus '_PS_001'. When the new copy is saved, another '_PS_001' is added. Quite frankly I don't think that the current file rename options in Lightroom allow you to do what you want to do. You'll have to rename that second file yourself after it has been added.

Thanks for the reply! Yes I agree that's the problem. I wonder if there's a better naming system for this kind of workflow?

Thank you again!

What I do is simply use Filename and nothing else. What happens in that case is that your first PSD gets saved as 'Filename.PSD'. Because the original is called 'Filename.RAW' there is no problem. If your send the Filename.PSD' file to Photoshop again (as copy), then your OS makes sure it will be saved as 'Filename-2.PSD' so it does not overwrite the original. Only if you send this file to Photoshop for the third time, you will get an odd filename again. You might think that this third copy will be saved as 'Filename-3.PSD', but that is not the case. The OS does not consider '-2' as a sequence number and does not consider this new file as part of a sequence, so the third file will be called 'Filename-2-2.PSD'. Because I hardly ever create three copies, I couldn't care less and it's easy to change that in Lightroom once the file has returned.

Thank you Johan for sharing your approach. And yes I agree this is a very straight forward approach for under 3 versions under.

Hope there's someone out there with a solution for over 3 versions will see this and reply.

Cheers, wish you a wonderful week!
