I am working on images for a client and they sent me a lightroom catalog along with a folder of RAW images. I notice in lightroom, in the develop panel, it says treatment profile and says profile missing. When I open a raw image with the sidecar file it also says in camera raw that the profile is not installed. Is this a problem with how they are exporting the catalog? Or something on my end? I have always used presets and not profiles so I am not sure how this can be avoided in the future? How can they export/send lightroom catalogs with the treatment profile they used?

If you use a profile that your client does not have, or vice versa, then you/the client needs to get a copy of that profile and install it too. Profiles are not kept in the catalog, nor in sidecar files.

So are profiles usually downloaded somewhere else on your computer? That you have imported into lightroom?

Yes, by default they are installed in the Camera Raw Settings folder because they are shared with Camera Raw.
