I'm using a Mac and a first time Lightroom user. I store all my images on an external hard drive. To import new images I first create a new collection in Library and then hit "import." The new collection doesn't appear on the destination side of the import screen...what am I missing or doing wrong?
You don't really import into a collection. On import, photos are in a Finder folder, and it's also possible to add to an existing collection
So on Import's right hand side it shows folders in Destination. At the top, there is an option to add to a collection.

I'll add that collections aren't physical locations - they are just virtual groupings of photos, like iTunes playlists or Amazon wish lists.
