Lightroom 6.0 suddenly became slow and unresponsive

New Here ,
Jul 08, 2025 Jul 08, 2025

I have been using LR 6.0 for a long time with no objections (I really don't need subscription service).
However last week, with WIN 11 update to 24H2 - it started to be unresponsive ("the program is not responding") or incredibly slow (each mouseclick takes like 10 seconds to get reaction, improting a photo takes more than a minute).

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program.

Is this known issue or is it just Adobe trying to force me to subscription model (they will not succeed though...)

I so much wish I was kidding.
Slow at:

-when program opens, it takes almost a minute to close the splash screen and display the photos in the directory (usually it took seconds)

-when I click with mouse on a different directory, it takes 30 secunds to change and display pictures from that directory (usually it was instantenious)

-when I click on a picture to develop, it takes a minute

-when I go into develop mode, it takes 30 seconds

-every move of a slider takes 10 to 15 seconds to show the result (all tasks above were done immediatelly)

-etc etc. Every task I give it, it takes too long. And I get "program is not responding" many times when I want some action (for example those listed above).

For example: right now it is syncronizing the folder with 85 new DNG photos for the last 60 minutes. And still hasn't finished.

Have you tried uninstalling the 24H2 update to see if it makes any difference?

Unfortunatelly I am over past the rollback period.

Has anyone else reported problems after installing this update?

Those symptoms might indicate an issue with the drive on your system where the photo files are located.

If that's the case, you need to be sure all your images are backed up immediately.

What is the drive configuration in your computer? Also, how much free space in % do you have on the drive where your photos are located?

Well...
The drive has 80% of free space. While I backup all the documents, I don't think this is a problem, as ACDSEE is accessing those photos without any problem.
This drive is designated for photos and videos, it is a 4TB HDD, the lightroom catalogue is stored on SSD with 50% of free space.
I doubt, that the drive configuration or failure is the cause, as no other program is affected. (even other Adobe programs are not affected, only Lightroom)

That configuration should be zippy. I have a similar setup with Catalog on dedicated SSD and other dedicated HD for the image files. Sill, the operations you describe as slow are mostly related to disk access. Take a look at this video on checking your hard drive.

You might also copy some of your latest folders/files to the SSD, point LrC at those and see if it helps the speed.

Thanks for this advice - I tried but it is not file access- The program doesn't even start. Roight now I started it and it is still displaying the splash screen, while the photos are displayed under it. When I click on a menu, I get the "Program is not responding" message.

Hi @gorazds9943838, Welcome to the Lightroom Classic community forum! Looks like our community experts are doing a great job trying to help with you with the issue you're encountering. As you may know, Lightroom 6.0 is a legacy product, and is no longer supported or updated by Adobe. Meaning, it hasn't been tested or optimized for compatibility with newer operating systems like Windows 11 24H2. While Adobe is not intentionally disabling older versions, the lack of updates can introduce performance problems that unfortunately won’t be patched.

While I know you may be hesitant to try a subscription model, you can check out our Photography plans here: https://adobe.ly/4eG8C9U. You can access the latest features and workflow updates that have been made to Lightroom Classic!

In the meantime, it may help the Community Experts to send along your system information to better help with the issue you're encountering. You can find your system info by going to Help > System Info, copying and pasting it into a text file, and attaching it here. I hope this helps! ^CH

Thank you very much for kind reply.
The reason I stayed with Lr6 is - I am not a professional, nor enthusiast photographer. I wanted a program, that will store (and catalogue) photos of my child (which has grown up by now) in my life, therefore it is not economical for me to opt for monthly subscription.
While I understand that you have no need/incentive to update the program, I would stilly kindly ask you to try to explain the following to me: three days ago the Lr started functioning normally. I didn't restart the computer, I did nothing out of the ordinarry, I just oppened it and it started working. Today it is lagging again. I haven't restarted comp in those last three days, it just... stopped working - meaning it is slow and stops responding. (I tried restarting the comp, but no change for the better).

I did the RAM diagnostic, tried the old catalogue - no change.
No worries, there are other programs, that don't require the subscription, I will just need to get used to them. However, the catalogue for the past 24 years is gone.
Just in case I am attaching computer specs.

I use Lightroom Classic (LrC) with the Creative Cloud system. However, I recently had a similar issue with LrC. Shortly after building a new computer and installing all my apps, LrC would not open. I turns out that defective RAM in that new machine corrupted the catalog. Once I replaced the defective ram and used a backup catalog. LrC worked fine.

The catalog can get corrupted for several reasons. Try a backup catalog to see if that is the problem.

Thank you for your advice.

I followed it, but unfortunatelly - RAM is ok (wait, this is a good news) and old catalogue didn't make the difference. (ok, this is the unfortunate news)

Thanks.
