I have just updated to Lightroom 6 through creative cloud. Lightroom 5 used to work perfectly, if a little slowly, but 6 just keeps crashing when I try to browse or edit images. This morning it has crashed 30 times and I have only managed to edit 5 images from a recent wedding. I've disabled all plugins, but that didn't help, and have tried to boot in safe mode, again with no success. I am running a MacBook Pro, 2.53 GHz Core2 duo, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB, Yosemite, 500GB SSD. I have tried to go back to LR5 but the updated catalogue won't work with it. Any ideas anyone?
Your original LR5 catalog is still there, so you could go back to that, and you'd only lose the work that you did on the 5 images.
But with LR6, try turning off the GPU option on the Lightroom>Preferences>Performance tab. Does that make a difference?

‌OH how I wish this had worked. But I don't see the bad behaviour being caused by GPU. I removed cc 6.1.1 completely and then reinstalled it, reset all the preferences to default. Did some edits on a couple of fairly small jpg' and on return to Library the display shows "loading" and no histogram. After five minutes, yet again I used Carl-alt-del and restarted LR cuz it was frozen. Flipping between different images I would get way ahead of the display, the navigator shows a different image than what is selected which may or may not display a histogram. Thank God I am not tied to this program in a commercial environment.

Your issue doesn't seem to be GPU related. Actually I face the problem you're mentioning about before. But after the recent 1 - 2 update the problem disappear.
For me it happen when I process some particular (but not all) image, especially those that I enable lens profiles correction + higher noise reduction. When I presss G to go back to library the image histogram show loading. Although I can navigate to other image but it consume 100% of my CPU (not GPU cause at that time I can't enable GPU acceleration yet). I sometime need to wait for 2 minutes before the histogram loaded completely for that image and it stop consume my CPU and I can smoothly process other images.
But I'm not sure it's because of GPU acceleration or if Adobe patched the problem. I now haven't seen the same problem again.
Thanks.

‌Thanks a lot! LR does not crash anymore and GPU acceleration is enabled !
On my config, it does not seem faster in develop module. Some kind of latency appears.

For me most performance bump with GPU acceleration enable seem to be at the transition. Example like coming out of develop module to library module, when browsing photo in library module, preview of effect on photo when moving slider in develop module.
Process like exporting, render 1:1 preview doesn't seem to have any added performance bonus. I would say that it does have some benefit with the GPU acceleration enable and I can feel the little differences.
BTW I am using a very slow rig to begin with. So any added performance is more noticeable and of course appreciated.
Thanks.

Wow. That AMD Catalyst Control centre settings trick worked for me! Thanks a lot. Lightroom had started freezing on me only really recently and it was driving me up the wall - couldn't get anything done with any kind of consistency.
I will add that rather than have those settings on permanently for all applications, I added them as application specific settings for Lightroom. Not such an issue on a dedicated workstation but for anyone who uses their computer for other activities having application specific settings may be preferable.
Once again, thanks for the solution!

Yes, an application specific profile inside AMD Catalyst Control center is good way to go especially if you have other use of the GPU like gaming. So only when you launch Lightroom the specific setting will apply and not to other application. To avoid confusion and to reduce steps for this temporary fix, I didn't mention it here.
Anyone who have better understanding on operating system and driver configuration should consider the extra step.
Thanks.

Surprisingly it worked here too - and set as application specific, just in case.
What I think happened was that the Windows 10 update updated my AMD graphics driver to the presumably latest version (despite Adobe's recommendation to use a specific older AMD driver version for the time being while they investigate an issue with AMD). I never knowingly update the driver, but the version stated in the info panel of the Catalyst Control Center showed a more recent version.
So I guess in the end, this trick may work while at the same time allowing use of the latest (or at least newer) AMD driver.

I always manually install / update my graphic card drivers. I also prefer not to update anything when I need my system on production period.
Windows 7 separate hardware drivers from critical windows update. I only update the critical section and not the hardware drivers. I had never update hardware drivers with windows update.
For Windows 10 I am not sure because I read from tech forum that user cannot stop Windows 10 update. Good luck to Windows 10 users.
Thanks.

Thanks so much for this...was running Lightroom CC on Windows 10 with the exact same hardware setup as you. It was crashing constantly.
Following your example I was able to set up a program-specific profile using the Catalyst driver and now it's working fine with GPU acceleration enabled.

Thank you AndyLai for sharing your findings. Your fix solved all the hanging issues I was having and allows Lightroom to work faster than I have ever seen it run before. Why isn't Adobe coming up with solutions to the problems they create?

Same issue...Lightroom keeps crashing after trying to switch from one picture to another. on windows7, amd radeon hd7500. amd recently updated their drivers, it was working for maybe one day now it constantly crashes. the update allowed lightroom to use the gpu (it couldn't before). it won't let me disable the GPU ("Use Graphics Processor" option). when i try to disable it crashes.

Did you try both the setting I mention (with screenshot) on the upper post on 02 Aug 2015 2pm?
It seem to be working as a temporary fix for me and some other people here too.

Hey all. I'm running the latest Macbook Pro (retina, 15in Mid 2015) 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3
with the intel Iris Pro 1536 MB...
And I am sick, with terror over all the HUGE crashes, losing entire catalogues, stalling out and having to tell my clients I can't fulfill their orders/or it taking weeks /months longer because a simple edit turns into an INSANE nightmare... PLEASE ADOBE FIX THIS!!!! You are killing our businesses!!!

Did you try the above fix? It may work for Mac too.
At least it's worth a try! I know how you feel from before finding this workaround, and I don't even have clients [yet].. Maddening didn't describe it.

Is the option for GPU acceleration available in Lightroom at your Macbook? If the options in not available or disable then your crashing issue cannot be solve by above method. But if it's available then you could give it a try. Just look for the same phrase in Graphic setting page at your Macbook, Vertical Refresh and OpenGL Triple Buffering both to on. I had never use Macbook before so I can't gave you detail instructions.
BTW if all fail and you need to do production works just temporary disable the GPU Acceleration inside Lightroom preference. It's actually doesn't make too much difference consider you got a quite new and decent performance Macbook.
Good Luck.

The option in LR is already disabled. It's not helping, sadly.
